What is IMA?

IMA is a premier institution that was established in 1932 in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. It is spread over 1400 acres of land and has a capacity of 1600 cadets. IMA has a rich history and tradition of producing some of the finest officers and leaders of the Indian Army, such as Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, General K.M. Cariappa, General Bipin Rawat, and many others.

IMA has four terms of training, each lasting six months. The first term is called the Spring Term, which starts in January and ends in June. The second term is called the Autumn Term, which starts in July and ends in December. The third term is called the Winter Term, which starts in January and ends in June. The fourth term is called the Summer Term, which starts in July and ends in December.

During each term, cadets undergo rigorous training in various subjects, such as military tactics, weapons handling, drill, physical fitness, leadership skills, communication skills, and general studies. Cadets also participate in various sports and extracurricular activities, such as horse riding, swimming, boxing, debating, and cultural events.

At the end of each term, cadets have to pass various tests and exams to qualify for the next term. At the end of the fourth term, cadets have to pass a final exam called the Passing Out Parade (POP), which marks their graduation from IMA. Cadets who successfully complete their training at IMA are awarded a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and are commissioned as Lieutenants in the Indian Army.
