Security tokens are alphanumeric codes that are used to authenticate users and grant them access to Salesforce data from outside the Salesforce website. Security tokens are especially useful when you want to connect to Salesforce from a third-party app or service, such as an email client, a mobile app, or an API. What is a security token?

A security token is a 25-character code that is generated by Salesforce and assigned to each user.   • Using a desktop client, such as Outlook or Thunderbird, to access your Salesforce email.
  • Using a mobile app, such as Salesforce Mobile or Salesforce Authenticator, to access your Salesforce account.
  • Using an API, such as SOAP or REST, to integrate your Salesforce data with another app or service.

A security token is not required when you log in to Salesforce from a trusted network or device, such as:

  • Using a web browser, such as Chrome or Firefox, to access the Salesforce website.
  • Using a VPN (Virtual Private Network) or a proxy server to access the Salesforce website.
  • Adding your IP address or range to the trusted IP list in your Salesforce settings.

How to generate a security token

To generate a security token in Salesforce in 2023, follow these steps:

  1. Visit the official website of Salesforce at https://www.salesforce.com/ and log in with your username and password.
  2. Click on the gear icon on the top right corner of the screen and select “Setup”.
  3. In the left sidebar, under “Platform Tools”, click on “Users” and then “Users”.
  4. Find your name in the list of users and click on it.
  5. In the user detail page, under “Security Controls”, click on “Reset Security Token”.
  6. You’ll receive an email from Salesforce with your new security token. The email will also contain instructions on how to use your security token.

Note: You can also generate a security token by using the Salesforce app on your smartphone or tablet. Here are the steps:

  1. Download and install the Salesforce app from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store on your device.
  2. Open the app and log in with your username and password.
  3. Tap on the menu icon (three horizontal lines) on the top left corner of the screen and tap on “Settings”.
  4. Tap on “Reset Security Token” and confirm your action.
  5. You’ll receive an email from Salesforce with your new security token. The email will also contain instructions on how to use your security token.

How to use a security token

To use a security token to authenticate yourself and access Salesforce data from outside the Salesforce website, follow these steps:

  1. Open the app or service that you want to connect to Salesforce, such as an email client, a mobile app, or an API.
  2. Enter your username and password as usual.
  3. Append your security token to the end of your password without any spaces. For example, if your password is “password” and your security token is “ABCDEF1234567890”, enter “passwordABCDEF1234567890” as your password.
  4. Click on “Log In” or “Connect” and you’ll be able to access your Salesforce data.

Note: You can also use a security token to change your password or reset your login challenge questions in case you forget them.

What to do if you lose your security token

If you lose your security token, don’t worry. You can easily generate a new one by following the steps mentioned above. However, keep in mind that generating a new security token will invalidate your old one, so you’ll have to update your password with the new security token in all the apps or services that you use to connect to Salesforce.

Alternatively, you can also contact Salesforce support at 1800-667-6389 (toll-free) or https://help.salesforce.com/ (online) and request them to send you a new security token. They’ll verify your identity and email address and send you a new security token.
